Dr. Martin Luther King was shot and killed on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, TN. Just a week later, on April 11, 1968, the Federal Fair Housing Act was signed by President Lyndon Johnson.
The Fair Housing Act established a national policy to provide for fair housing throughout the US and prohibits discrimination in the housing market through the following protected classes:
- Race
- Religion
- Color
- Sex
- Disability
- Familial Status
- National Origin
The National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics Article 10 provides additional protection for gender and sexual orientation.
This short film, "SEVEN DAYS" chronicles the seven days between the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the passage of the Fair Housing Act.
This short film may be difficult to watch and is a very powerful film.
There are limited exceptions for some housing, including owner-occupied buildings of 4 or fewer units and some single-family homes. In addition, religious organizations and private clubs that rent housing for non-profit purposes may favor their members.
